Assessing your program should be
a regular part of business. Whether a new non-profit
or one with a long history,
any fundraising program can benefit from an in-depth
examination that allows you to adjust your course
and develop the plans and mechanisms for significant
progress.
Frequently, the impetus for an
assessment is a change in leadership; a campaign
beginning, at mid-point or
concluding; a plateau or a slump in the overall program
or a component. However, anytime is a good time to
check and fine tune your program’s health.
Assessments may be at the macro or micro level:
- Entire program
- Program component (e.g., annual fund/membership, major gifts)
- An aspect of a program/component (e.g., case statements, annual fund solicitation letters)
- Points of integration and interface with other
areas (e.g., alumni relations and communications)
Deliverables
- A report of findings that identifies strengths and areas for improvement;
specific recommendations to create a solid foundation
to build upon.
- Presentation to the CEO, Board or a committee if desired.
- Assistance in implementation if desired.
Add-on: Periodic (mid-year and/or one-year) review
of progress.
